The Smudged Sign-In Sheet

Easy — logic-grid deduction puzzle

Glue has smudged the sign-in sheet, so it's up to you to work out who sat where, which tool they used and which cover they made.

The evening bookbinding class ran late again. Flora, Henry, Ruby and Percy each worked at a station along the long counter. The stations were numbered from 1 on the left to 4 on the right. Each of them took a different tool from the shared kit and made a little book with a different cover. When the teacher came back to lock up, the counter was neat and tidy. But someone had knocked over the glue pot, and the sign-in sheet was one big sticky smudge. All that was left was what people remembered from the evening. Can you put it back together?

Clues

  1. One of Flora and Henry sat at station 1, and the other sat at station 2.
  2. Flora sat somewhere to the left of Henry.
  3. The awl went to Flora or Henry, and the bone folder went to the other one.
  4. The awl was used at a station farther left than the bone folder.
  5. The glue brush was used on one of the brown paper and parchment covers, and the linen thread was used on the other.
  6. The numbers of the stations where the marbled cover and the brown paper cover were made added up to 5.
  7. Ruby sat one station to the right of where the brown paper cover was made.
  8. Only one of these was true: Ruby used the glue brush, or Percy made the parchment cover.
