Closing Time at the Beach Huts

Very Easy — logic-grid deduction puzzle

Gilbert, Mabel, Roland and Cicely come in from the sea just in time to collect their hut keys and towels before the beach closes.

The afternoon sun is sinking low over the beach. Gilbert, Mabel, Roland and Cicely have just run out of the sea, dripping wet and shivering. Their hut keys hang in a row on a little wooden rack by the steps, from the first key along to the fourth, and a pile of towels sits folded beside it. The beach attendant wants to lock up soon, so every key and every towel has to go back to the right bather.

Clues

  1. Gilbert and Mabel had the first and second keys between them.
  2. Mabel's key hung somewhere before Gilbert's on the rack.
  3. Cicely's key hung further along than Roland's on the rack.
  4. Whoever had the first key had brought the striped towel.
  5. Of the people with the second and third keys, one had brought the polka-dot towel and the other the plain towel.
  6. On the rack, the key of whoever had brought the plain towel hung right after the key of whoever had brought the polka-dot one.
