Fresh Paint on the Temple Beams

Very Hard — logic-grid deduction puzzle

When their mountain temple joins the heritage list, four village volunteers repaint its faded beams, then lose the work log in a storm.

Word came up the mountain: at a big meeting far away in a port city, the old temple had been added to the heritage list. Visitors would soon be on their way, and the roof beams had faded badly. So the monks asked for help, and four volunteers climbed up from the village: Soyeon, Taemin, Eunji and Sungmin. They took one day each, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Each one painted with a colour and worked with a tool that nobody else used. Then a rainstorm blew the work log off the scaffold and down into the valley. Over lunch in the courtyard, the four of them tried to remember who had done what.

  5. Of Soyeon, Eunji and Sungmin, Soyeon was the last to work.
  6. Taemin, the volunteer who painted in black and the volunteer with the brush were three different people.
