Up the Spiral Stair — Daily puzzle for 2026-09-29

Easy — logic-grid deduction puzzle

Four volunteers climbed the lighthouse stair for polishing day, and each took a different tier, lens and tool.

Once a season, the lighthouse keeper pinned up a polishing rota, and this time Oliver, Lucy, Walter and Edith climbed the spiral stair to help. Each of them took a different tier of the great lamp, cleaned a lens of a different color, and grabbed a different tool from the kit hanging by the door. That evening the keeper wrote it all in the logbook, and then a cup of tea spilled across the page. Only a few notes could still be read. Use them to work out who polished where, which lens they cleaned, and what they used.

Clues

  1. One of Oliver and Lucy polished the first tier, and the other polished the second tier.
  2. Oliver worked on a lower tier than Lucy did.
  3. Of Walter and Edith, one cleaned the red lens and the other cleaned the yellow lens.
  4. The red lens sat lower down the lamp than the tier where Edith worked.
  5. The chamois cloth went to one of the blue and green lenses, and the brass squeegee went to the other.
  6. Whoever cleaned the green lens did not use the chamois cloth.
  7. Whoever had the chamois cloth was working further down the lamp than whoever had the brass squeegee.
  8. The cotton pad was used on the tier just above the one where the lint brush was used.
