Waiting for the Lift — Daily puzzle for 2026-11-06

Medium — logic-grid deduction puzzle

Each applicant rode up to a different floor of the visa bureau with a different kind of application and a folder with its own colored tab.

The new visa bureau opened its doors on a rainy Monday, and by nine o'clock the lift was packed. Verity, Otto, Camille and Rashid stood shoulder to shoulder, each holding a folder with a bright colored tab sticking out of the side. They all watched the little lights above the door, waiting for their own floor. No two of them had come for the same reason, and no two were heading to the same floor. By lunchtime the clerks had lost track of which folder had gone where, and only a few scribbled notes were left to help them sort it out.

Clues

  1. One of Verity and Otto got out on the first floor, and the other got out on the second floor.
  2. Verity's interview was lower down than Otto's.
  3. Of the tourist and student applications, one had a blue tab and the other had a dark red tab.
  4. The student application was handled exactly one floor above the tourist application.
  5. The folder with the purple tab and the tourist application were on floors whose numbers added up to five.
  6. Camille was interviewed somewhere below the floor that took the transit application.
  7. The folder with the dark red tab went to a higher floor than the folder with the blue tab.
