The Greenhouse on the Roof

Very Hard — logic-grid deduction puzzle

Four friends each grow one crop in a rooftop greenhouse, and every pot has its own marker color and its own tier on the rack.

High on top of a busy city building there is a small glass greenhouse. Four friends, Marisol, Aleksy, Nell and Kwame, each grow one crop there in a single pot. The pots stand on a tall rack whose tiers are numbered from the bottom up. The first tier is nearest the floor and the fourth is right up under the glass. Each grower pushed a colored marker into the soil so nobody would mix up the pots. One warm morning the roof vents swung open, the hoses started dripping, and someone asked a simple question: whose pot is whose?

Clues

  1. The basil sat on the first tier, close to the floor.
  2. Marisol's pot sat one tier above or one tier below the cucumber.
  3. Nell's pot sat higher than both Marisol's pot and Aleksy's pot.
  4. The tier numbers of Kwame's pot and the pot with the yellow marker add up to six.
  5. Aleksy's pot, the pepper, the pot with the green marker and the pot on the fourth tier were four different pots.
  6. Of the cucumber and the pot with the blue marker, one belonged to Aleksy and the other sat on the fourth tier.
  7. Either Marisol grew the basil or the pepper had the yellow marker, but not both.
