The Torn Docket

Hard — logic-grid deduction puzzle

Four strangers bring urgent cases to a late-night court, and a torn docket sheet leaves the clerk with a record to rebuild.

An emergency docket kept the courthouse open late into the night. Blythe, Delia, Fraser and Hope had never met before, but each of them was waiting to bring a case before the judge. The clerk gave each of them a different hearing time and marked each file with a different symbol. Then, on its way to the judge, the docket sheet got torn. Help the clerk put the record back together before the files go back into court.

Clues

  1. Fraser's hearing came right before or right after the hearing of the person whose file had the circle.
  2. Hope was heard later than both Delia and Blythe.
  3. The rent dispute was heard after the case whose file had the circle, but before Delia's hearing.
  4. Delia came to court over the delivery dispute.
  5. The awning complaint and the case with the square on its file were heard one right after the other, in some order.
  6. Only one of these was true: Hope's file had the triangle, or Delia's file had the diamond.
