The Sooty Firing Log — Daily puzzle for 2026-10-05

Very Easy — logic-grid deduction puzzle

Help four hop workers fill in the firing log that a puff of soot has smudged.

The evening's work at the oast house is done. Rose, Enid, Horace and Maud each took a turn firing the kiln to dry a batch of hops, and now the baskets have all been carried away. The bricks are still warm, but a puff of soot has smudged the firing log, and nobody can read who went when or what they dried. Help the four of them fill the log in again before they head home.

Clues

  1. Of Rose and Enid, one took the first turn at the kiln and the other took the second turn.
  2. Horace lit the kiln earlier than Maud did.
  3. Of Horace and Maud, one dried the Fuggle and the other the Golding.
  4. The Fuggle hops were dried in the firing right after Enid's.
  5. Whoever took the first turn did not dry Challenger hops.
