Gust over the Marsh — Daily puzzle for 2026-10-08

Medium — logic-grid deduction puzzle

Catherine, Miles, Tamsin and Wesley must sort out their mixed-up count sheets before they leave the reserve.

At first light, Catherine, Miles, Tamsin and Wesley each crept into a wooden hide beside the water to count birds. The hides stood one after another along the path, each a little farther from the entrance than the one before. Each watcher kept an eye on one kind of bird and wrote down a peak tally, the most of that bird they saw at one time. When the mist began to lift, the four met at the reserve office and laid their count sheets on a folding map board. Then a sudden gust swept the name cards off the sheets and mixed them all up. The notes could still be read, so the four set about working out whose sheet was whose.

Clues

  1. Only one of these was true: Catherine counted the bittern, or Miles wrote down a peak tally of 8.
  2. With the hides numbered one to four from the entrance, the number of Miles's hide and the number of the hide with a peak tally of 6 added up to three.
  3. Of Miles and Wesley, one counted the lapwing and the other had a peak tally of 4.
  4. The lapwing and the redshank were both counted from hides other than the 300-metre hide and the 1200-metre hide.
  5. The hide where the redshank was counted lay between Wesley's hide and the hide with a peak tally of 2.
  6. Catherine wrote down a peak tally of 6 on the count sheet.
