A Squall at the Customs Shed — Daily puzzle for 2026-10-10

Hard — logic-grid deduction puzzle

A squall soaked the customs ledger, leaving only a few notes about the crates that Flora, Gideon, Hester and Ivo checked.

One grey morning in 1970, a squall came roaring in off the harbour and straight through the open doors of the customs shed. Papers went flying in every direction. Four crates sat waiting to be checked, and Flora, Gideon, Hester and Ivo each took one, each working in a different numbered lane. By the time someone got the doors shut, the rain had soaked the ledger and smudged nearly every line. Only a few notes could still be read. The ship was due to sail that evening, so the clerk had until then to put the record back together from what was left.

Clues

  1. The lane numbers of Flora and Gideon, put together, came to five more than the lane number of Hester.
  2. Flora's lane lay between the lanes of Hester and Gideon.
  3. One of Flora and Gideon checked the tea, and the other checked the crate that weighed 6 kg.
  4. Of Hester and Ivo, one opened the crate of clocks and the other opened the 16 kg crate.
  5. Hester worked in a lower-numbered lane than both Flora and Ivo.
  6. Only one of these was true: Flora checked the 7 kg crate; Hester checked the 16 kg crate; Ivo checked the 24 kg crate.
  7. The scales showed 6 kg for the crate of wool.
  8. The crate of clocks tipped the scales at 24 kg.
